2024/2025 School Tax Season for Nassau County

October is a vibrant and colorful month in the Northeast, but for homeowners in Nassau County, it’s also a time of reckoning, as they receive their 1st Half School Tax bills for the 2024/25 tax year. These bills can come as a shock, given that School Taxes make up a significant portion—over 60 percent—of the total property tax burden.

Why Are School Taxes in Nassau County Rising So Much?

School districts in Nassau County raise much of their revenue from local property taxes, but a significant portion of this revenue also comes from state and federal aid. Unfortunately, federal COVID-related relief payments are now ending, and future state aid is uncertain, given that New York State currently faces a $2.3 billion budget gap. The result is that school tax levies will probably continue to rise in the near future, which means your property tax bills will likely rise with them as well.

Phase-In Tax Relief is Phasing Out

As we’ve mentioned in prior blog posts, the TPP — known as the “Taxpayer Protection Plan” and also as RPIA (Reassessment Phase-In Act of 2020) is coming to an end. If you’ll recall, the TPP/RPIA was passed during COVID to lessen the impact of the 2020/21 property tax reassessment. The plan provided a fixed property tax exemption each year for five years beginning in tax year 2020/2021. The 2024/2025 tax year marks the expiration of the TPP/RPIA, resulting in Nassau County homeowners now facing higher property tax bills.

What Exemptions Can I Still Claim?

Nassau County homeowners can still avail themselves of a number of exemptions, and we encourage you to use them.  To take advantage of these exemptions, you’ll need to be a member of a class of individuals for whom these exemptions were designed, for example, a veteran, senior citizen, a volunteer firefighter/ambulance worker, or a person with limited income and disabilities.

You can access a full list of exemption forms at Nassau County’s official website at: https://www.nassaucountyny.gov/3575/Exemption-Applications
